Vancouver track closed following lead scare
Canadian Olympic officials scrambling to repair Vancouver bobsled track after ice imported from China found to be contaminated with lead.
FIBT officials announced today that Vancouver's new bobsled track would need to undergo serious repairs to replace the imported ice, which tests have shown to be almost 99% lead. Track officials claim the ice appeared legitimate, and blamed unscrupulous dealers for misleading them on its quality.
"Our Chinese supplier said this was clean, pure dragon-ice from the mountains of China, and the price he quoted was incredibly affordable. I suppose we should have been suspicious when the ice was shipped to us in ingots. He also said that the metal-color was natural for dragon-ice. Turns out it was too good to be true," explained track engineer Peter Martin.
The track officials say they will return the faulty ice to China, where it will be used for paint in children's toys. "Although it's more expensive, from now on we'll have to use Canadian ice," said Martin.
